After we left Kandy we headed to Adams Peak. It took us about 3-4 hours to get there but we took a private van with A/C and blasted some One Direction the whole way. The drive was extremely pretty as we went through a lot of tea plantations, seeing lots of workers plucking tea leaves and carrying the bundles on their backs. When we got to the hotel we settled in, had some dinner and went to bed around 7. Then we woke up at 2am to get changed and start hiking! It took us about 2.5 hours to hike up to the top and it was extremely tough but worth it! We were up in time for sunrise and it clouded over fairly soon after. When we first began our walk we had a pretty close encounter with a leopard - which might almost be my highlight of the trip so far. It was pitch black as we walked and I heard a loud rustle in the bushes off to my left so Katie (who was wearing a headlamp) turned just in time for us to see a leopard walking away. It was maybe 25 feet away from us!! I was super excited to get a glimpse of one and somehow wasn't afraid because A) it was going the opposite direction now, and B) if it had wanted to sneak up and attack us it would've been easy since they are so quiet and fast. So anyways that was a pretty cool story to add onto the trip!
After Adam's Peak we spent about 12 hours on transit to get to the beach town called Hikkaduwa. It was a long day and our feet were incredibly sore afterwards from the hike/elevation changes and then sitting still for so long. But the next day we happily woke up in Hikkaduwa where we spent almost a week enjoying the beach. We tanned, we ate, we swam, and then we went to bed to prepare for the next day of doing the exact same thing. It was pretty great. Oh and we got tattoos - a post on those will follow at some point!
